Our Med-Peds program was founded in 2002, with our first class of graduates finishing in 2006. Approximately 50% of our program graduates to date have chosen careers in primary or urgent care, with another 25% choosing hospital medicine, and approximately 25% choosing additional subspecialty training. The majority of our graduates are involved in resident or student education either as part of their ongoing clinical practice or by serving as key clinical faculty.

Andy Burgess, MD Dr. Burgess received his undergraduate degree in Engineering from the University of Alabama, Huntsville and his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. Andy was well known in our program as a cheerful, hard-working resident who is tirelessly devoted to his fellow residents and to patients here in Greenville and across the globe. Andy participated in a medical mission trip to Brazil during the third year of his residency. After graduation, Dr. Burgess joined GHS Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and also serves as teaching faculty for the Clinical Decision Making course for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Greenville.
Shannon Burgess, MD Shannon is a graduate of the University of Alabama, Huntsville where received her degree in Mechanical Engineering. She then attended the University Of South Alabama College Of Medicine where she was the recipient of the Les Stockwell Med-Peds and the Medical Alumni Scholarships and was also president of the Student Assembly. During her time at GHS, she served as the Vice President of the GHS House Staff Senate in 2014 and also as President in 2015 and 16. After graduation, Shannon has joined GHS Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and will also be serving as director of the 4th year Internal Medicine Clerkships for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Greenville.
Elizabeth DeWald, MD Dr. Dewald is originally from Smyrna, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia in Athens for her undergraduate education. She then attended the Medical College of Georgia where she was a member of both the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and Alpha Upsilon Phi Service and Leadership Honor Society. She was also Merck Manual Award and the Woo Memorial Award – for academic achievement and service. Liz was known in our program for her extensive knowledge base, her strong work ethic, and for her infectious smile and sense of humor. After graduation, Dr. DeWald Liz is working at GHS Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and will also be working as a hospitalist at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Teresa Williams, MD Dr. Williams received her Bachelor of Science, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her Masters of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health. She also received her MD degree from UAB, where she graduated cum laude and was a member of both the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Gold Humanism Society. During her residency, Teresa served as our Med-Peds chief resident in her fourth year and also has the honor of serving as one of the two pediatric chief residents this year. Teresa is very interested in global health and spent a month at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya during her third year of residency and has long term plans to practice medicine in Africa.

Sam Holdiness, MD Dr. Holdiness received his undergraduate degree at the University of Mississippi and his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he was a member of the Gold Humanism in Medicine Society as well as a recipient of the Mississippi Rural Physician’s Scholarship. As a Med-Peds resident Sam was widely known for his enthusiasm for life, his infectious laughter, and his genuine compassion for his patients as well as for his fellow residents. After graduation, Sam returned to his home state of Mississippi to join the Kosciusko Medical Clinic which was his father’s practice to be with his family and to honor his commitment to the underserved of rural Mississippi.
Laura Johnson, MD Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Drury University in Springfield Missouri and did her medical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin before joining us here in Greenville. Laura was an outstanding clinician, leader and patient advocate during her residency. She served as president of the GHS Housestaff Senate and increased awareness of patient safety issues amongst all residents at GHS. After graduation, Laura works as a clinical teacher with the department of family medicine here in Greenville, teaching in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Kelly Kays, MD Dr. Kays is a magna cum laude graduate of Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY outside of Lexington. She completed her medical school training at the University of Louisville before joining us here in Greenville. Kelly has a passion for the underserved and international health. Kelly was a tremendous resident here and was well-known for her hard work, dedication to her patients, an insightful approach to patient care and for her smiling resting face. After graduation, Kelly has joined a large Med-Peds Hospitalist group at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, TN outside of Nashville.
Sen Ravindran, MD Dr. Ravindran received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then went to East Carolina University Brody School of medicine for his MD. Sen was a truly outstanding resident for us. He won the Lily and GD Jackson Award given to the most outstanding interns in the health system in his first year. He was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society Resident Chapter by the USC School of Medicine class of 2013 and was named Resident of the Year by the USC School of Medicine class of 2015. Sen was our Med-Peds Chief Resident and has been an amazing leader, clinician, teacher, role model and break dancer. Sen will be staying with us following graduation and now works as a hospitalist at Greer Memorial and Anderson Medical Center as well as serving as our first Associate Program Director for the Med-Peds residency program.
Jill Sullivan, MD Dr. Sullivan received her undergraduate degree in marine biology from Coastal Carolina University. She then earned her PhD in microbiology from East Carolina University and did a post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University. She then earned her MD at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. During her residency, Jill was very passionate about improving the transition in care from childhood to adulthood for adolescents and young adults with special health care needs and created and led an amazing two day transitional care symposium here in Greenville. After graduation, Jill started a hematology/oncology fellowship at Duke University, with plans to specialize in the care of adolescent and young adult survivors of pediatric malignancies when she is finished.

Stephen Briggs, MD Dr. Briggs received his undergraduate degree at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Stephen is also a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine where his peers recognized him with election into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. During his residency, Stephen distinguished himself as a highly dedicated, intelligent resident with clear vision for his education, who was always willing to help his fellow residents. After graduation, we are very fortunate that Stephen stayed here in Greenville and joined the Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine practice in Wren, SC.
Mike Guyton, MD. Dr. Guyton is a Myrtle Beach native and received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina Honors College, and his MD from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. During his residency, was a stellar role model and teacher and was recognized by the students of the University of South Carolina as resident of the year in 2012 and 2013. After graduation, Mike served as a teaching attending at the Furman University Student Health Center, providing medical consultation to pediatric and adolescent patients at Marshall Pickens, and was a teaching attending with our general pediatrics division. He is currently undertaking an Adolescent Medicine fellowship at Mount Sinai in New York City and has plans to return to Greenville upon completion of his fellowship.
Sarah Hinton, MD. Dr. Hinton is a native of Lexington, SC and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Wofford College. Sarah then received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. During her residency, Sarah was a tremendous leader of her fellow residents and advocate for her patients. Sarah served as our Med-Peds Chief resident and created an integrated lecture series where guest lecturers from internal medicine and pediatrics compare and contrast approaches to medical problems common to both disciplines. Throughout her residency, Sarah was devoted to the medically underserved and worked as a primary care provider at New Horizon, a federally qualified health center here in Greenville for a year following graduation. She has now returned to GHS as teaching faculty. Sarah directs our Adolescent Medicine curriculum and also leads our transitional care initiative to help prepare adolescents and young adults patients at GHS for the transition to adult health care services.

Matt Nicholson, MD Dr. Nicholson received his undergraduate degree in the biological sciences from the University of Georgia where he was the comically oversized anthropomorphic Bulldog Mascot “Spike” for several basketball seasons. Matt then received his MD from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. During his residency training, Matt distinguished himself as a thoughtful clinician, a highly knowledgeable and patient teacher, and an electronic medical record genius. Following graduation, Matt joined the GHS MD 360 Convenient Care Group here in Greenville, SC for a year and is now undertaking an Endocrinology Fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia.
Cary Sanders Hefty, MD Dr. Sanders is a graduate of Berry College in Rome, Georgia where she received her Bachelor of Science. She completed her medical school training at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta where she received the MCG Descendant’s Scholarship. During her residency, Cary was a fantastic clinician, teacher, and leader with a strong interest in global health. Cary was already on a medical mission trip to Haiti when the earthquake of 2010 struck, and was immediately able to provide relief and solace to those in need. Cary worked in a rural Med-Peds Primary Care practice in Washington, Georgia for a year before returning to Greenville to join GHS Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. She now works at a primary care Med-Peds practice in with the Athens Regional Health System in Athens, Georgia.
Joy Smith, MD Sr. Smith is a graduate of Bob Jones University where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She completed her medical school training at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. During her intern year she was awarded the 2010 Lily M and G.D. Jackson Award – presented to the most outstanding interns in the Greenville Health System. Joy was also awarded the most outstanding resident teacher by the USC School of Medicine Class of 2013, and served our program as our Med-Peds Chief resident for 2012-13. Joy is now working as a Med-Peds hospitalist at Baptist Health South Florida in Miami, FL.
Candice Thornton, MD Dr. Thornton is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin, where she received her bachelor of arts. She then attended Medical School at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. During her residency, Candice was a careful clinician, a responsive leader, and an active teacher. She also has a passion for global health, and participated in a medical trip to Brazil. Candice is now practicing urgent care with the GHS MD 360 Convenient Care Group here in Greenville.

Drew Goldsmith, MD Dr. Goldsmith is a graduate of the University of Georgia where he received his Bachelor of Science in Honors Interdisciplinary Studies. He completed his medical school training at the Mercer University School of Medicine in 2008. During his residency at GHS, Drew distinguished himself in many ways. His intern year, he was the sole recipient of the GHS Lily M. and G.D. Jackson Award, was named resident teacher of the year by the USC School of Medicine. Drew was also nominated to the resident chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Drew served as our Med-Peds chief resident in his 4th year and went on several medical mission trips to Haiti and Trinidad. Drew was also the winner of the national Med-Peds Program Director’s Walter Tunnessen Award given to the 4th year Med-Peds resident nationwide who best demonstrates the values of dedicated patient care, excellent teaching, and patient advocacy. Carole Mercer, MD Dr. Mercer is a cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She completed her medical school training at the Mercer University School of Medicine in 2008. While a Med-Peds resident Carole was a compassionate clinician and a strong advocate for her patients and fellow residents. She participated actively in medical mission trips during her residency and provided relief to a variety of medically needy populations in Brazil. Following graduation Carole joined the Med-Peds hospitalists at Greer Memorial Hospital for a year, and now practices primary care Med-Peds with Brio Internal Medicine and Parkside Pediatrics in Greenville, SC.
Denny Myers, MD Dr. Myers graduated magna cum laude and received his undergraduate degree in the biological sciences from Clemson University, and his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina where he was a Gold Humanism Honor Society recipient. During his residency training, Denny was as a dedicated clinician, warm-hearted patient advocate, and an enthusiastic role model and mentor for his fellow residents. Following graduation, Denny joined the Med-Peds hospitalists at Greer Memorial Hospital.

Scott Annett, MD Dr. Annett received his B.S. in biology and chemistry from the University of Richmond where he was also a member of the men’s varsity soccer team. He then went on to receive his MD degree from the Medical College of Virginia. Scott also performed exceptionally well as a resident for us and served as our Med-Peds chief resident for 2010-11. Upon graduation Scott joined a Med-Peds hospitalist practice at Maury Regional Medical Center outside of Nashville, TN. He then returned to Greenville to complete a Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2015. Scott now practices and teaches sports medicine and Med-Peds primary care with Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, Simpsonville.
Andy Bowe, DO Dr. Bowe received his undergraduate degree in the biomedical sciences from the Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and his DO from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. During his residency training, Andy distinguished himself as a caring clinician, an enthusiastic teacher, and an outstanding role model. Andy completed a neonatology fellowship at the University of Virginia and is now a practicing neonatologist at the Pediatrix medical group in Macon, GA.
Nancy Cox, MD Dr. Cox received her undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia. She completed her medical school training at the Mercer University School of Medicine in 2007. During her residency, Nancy was an outstanding clinician and dedicated teacher and advocate for her fellow residents and students. Following graduation, Nancy returned to Georgia to honor a commitment to the underserved patients of rural Georgia with Physician’s Health Group, a multi-specialty primary care group affiliated with Jefferson Hospital in Louisville, GA.
Amanda O’Kelly. MD Dr. O’Kelly is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Furman University. She is also an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine where she was named a Carolina Medical Scholar and received a full-tuition merit-based scholarship. During her residency, Amanda quickly distinguished herself as an exceptionally dedicated clinician, teacher and leader. Amanda served admirably as the president of the GHS House Staff for 2010-11 and as pediatric chief resident in 2011-2. Amanda now is an Associate Program Director of the GHS Pediatric Residency Program and also works with Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, our outpatient Med-Peds faculty practice in Simpsonville, SC.

Heather Moreira, MD – Dr. Moreira received her undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia where she graduated magna cum laude and her MD from Mercer University School of Medicine. During her residency training, Heather distinguished herself as a meticulous clinician and enthusiastic teacher. Following graduation, Heather joined Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine which is our first Med-Peds practice at Hillcrest Hospital in Simpsonville.
Stefanie Putnam, MD – Dr. Putnam is a magna cum laude graduate of Furman University where she majored in both music and pre-medical studies. She completed her medical school training at the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine in 2006 where she was the president of the Brody Chapter of the AMA medical student section. During her intern year, Stefanie was awarded the Lily M. and G. D. Jackson Award, presented to most outstanding interns in the Greenville Health System and continued to be an exceptional clinician and role model throughout her residency. Following graduation, Stefanie joined Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in Simpsonville and will continue to be an important part of our residency program.
Zach Stone, MD – Dr. Stone received his B.A. in psychology from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He then went on to receive his M.D. degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Zach also performed exceptionally well as a resident for us and served as our Med-Peds chief resident during his 4th year. After graduation Zach joined a Med-Peds faculty practice affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Moody, Alabama.

Jeremy Byrd, MD – Dr. Byrd completed his medical school training at the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine where he graduated AOA in 2005. After graduation, Jeremy will be stayed at GHS and founded our first Med-Peds ambulatory practice, Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, Simpsonville. Jeremy also serves as attending in the Internal Medicine Clinic, teaches at the USC School of Medicine, Greenville, and also to sponsors an annual international health trip to Brazil for GHS residents.
Heather Hawthorne, MD – Dr. Hawthorne joined the GHS Med-Peds program after completing medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and served as one of our Med-Peds chief residents. After graduation, Heather completed her fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and now works as a pediatric oncologist Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Irvine, California.
George Petro, MD – Dr. Petro joined the GHS Med-Peds program after graduating AOA from Mercer University School of Medicine in 2005. Following graduation George returned to his hometown of Dahlonega, GA to practice primary care Med-Peds.
Sharon Wondrachek, MD – Dr. Wondrachek joined our program after graduating from the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. Sharon also served as one of our Med-Peds chief residents this year. After graduation, Sharon joined the UMG Internal Medicine office in Patewood and cares for pediatric patients with Greenville Pediatrics part time.

Jeff Gerac, MD – Dr. Gerac is a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 2004. Jeff served as Med-Peds chief resident here during his 4th year. Currently Jeff is a Med-Peds hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital. Jeff also attends on the pediatric wards at Children’s Hospital, and is the lead physician behind the Epic EMR for GHS.
Gregg Johnson, MD – Dr. Johnson is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina in 2004. He served as a Med-Peds hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital from 2008-2012 and now practices primary care Med-Peds with Drew Goldsmith at Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, Wren.
Stephanie Reckenbiel, DO – Dr. Reckenbiel completed her medical school training at Oklahoma Osteopathic Medicine in 2004. After residency, Stephanie completed a sports medicine fellowship program here at GHS. She is currently working in primary care Med-Peds in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Jerrod Reynolds, MD – Dr. Reynolds is a graduate of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He is currently working in private practice in Charleston, SC.

Lisa Darby, MD – Dr. Darby is a 2003 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. After completion of her Med-Peds residency, Lisa undertook a fellowship program in vascular medicine here at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Wes Jones, MD – Dr. Jones is a 2003 graduate of the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. After completing his first two years of Med-Peds training at the University of Tennessee, he transferred to Greenville and graduated in 2007. Wes served as a Med-Peds hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital until 2010 and now practices Med-Peds hospital medicine in North Carolina.
Christa McCann, MD – Dr. McCann graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 2003. Upon graduation, she went into private practice at the Eastside University Medical Group in Greenville, SC.
Lydia Nichols, MD – Dr. Nichols graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2003. After completing her Med-Peds residency program at GHS, Lydia undertook a second residency in anesthesiology at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

Stephanie Anderson, MD – Dr. Anderson is a 2001 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina in Columbia. Stephanie then undertook a Developmental-behavioral pediatrics fellowship at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
Matt Hindman, MD – Dr. Hindman is a 2002 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Matthew was a founding member of the Med-Peds Hospitalist Group at Greer Memorial Hospital where he continues to work and direct the Med-Peds hospitalist rotation for our residents.
