We would like to welcome you to the pediatric residency webpage of the Greenville Health System (GHS).
The Pediatric Residency Program at Greenville Children’s Hospital, much like the city of Greenville itself, is a bit of a hidden gem in the Southeast. When people who are not familiar with Greenville come to visit for the first time, they are amazed at the rare combination of cultural, entertainment and quality of life offerings for a city of this size. Similarly, our residency offers a wonderful blend of community-based primary care and academic tertiary care within the same program. We can offer this diversity because our program functions within the Greenville Health System, which started as a community hospital and has become one of the state’s top three academic medical centers. We are affiliated with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Greenville.
The residency program is a cornerstone of the Department of Pediatrics. Its balance of academics and community-based care has allowed our department to attract general pediatricians and pediatric sub-specialists from premier programs across the country. There is a common thread among our pediatric faculty: their dedication to both patient care and education. We take great pride that all of our faculty are both clinicians and educators. However, we also are proud of our faculty’s academic accomplishments, where many continue to lecture, publish, make presentations and lead the way in their respective fields.
Balance is also a theme throughout the training process for our residents. Over the course of three years, our residents will spend time rotating on both the inpatient and outpatient services, in large clinics and community offices, seeing well newborns and the sickest premature infants, taking care of “bread and butter” pediatric cases as well as the rare “zebras.” This broad-based training allows our residents to choose from a wide array of career options. Our recent graduates are a perfect reflection of our training: moving on to general practice, academic practice and subspecialty fellowships. In addition, our balanced curriculum yields well-educated physicians.
Diversity is a strength of our program. We have residents from across the United States and beyond. The class size of eleven residents allows a mixing of backgrounds and ideas, yet is small enough to allow the development of familiarity and close friendships. Our training is intense and challenging, yet the environment is supportive and nurturing. Our residents regularly get together outside of the hospital, for both educational and recreational activities.
We hope that you will take the opportunity to visit our program, meet our faculty, speak with our residents and explore our city. We think you’ll enjoy discovering all the facets of our hidden gem.
