The Patient Engagement Studio’s initial reviews were of an internally funded project examining the use of acupuncture in the treatment of cancer pain, a research program examining patient/physician shared decision-making in the treatment of shoulder pain and a pilot system intervention implementing “tele-discharge.” The Studio Board met with the investigators and made recommendations based on patient comments. Each project discussed by the Studio gets a detailed review addressing elements suggested by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
Currently initial discussions are underway to develop an oncology-specific studio and an orthopaedics-focused studio to address research plans, assist with recruitment strategies, and disseminate results in those specific study areas. Patient suggestions are documented and summarized for each project with expectations that the patient’s voice will be heard and changes will be incorporated. Follow-up with investigators will ascertain the impact of the Patient Engagement Studio on research efforts.
Future plans include establishment of groups of patient “experts” via social media to garner broader-range patient input to assure that the patient input from our “live” panels is representative of the larger community of patients, future patients and other community stakeholders. This expansion has the potential to expand our patient representatives regionally and nationally.
