  • With a concentration or focus in: Currently limited to Industrial Engineering students from Clemson University

Description of internship position:

The internship within the ED will focus on multiple factors that contribute to bottlenecks, delays, and potential patient harm throughout a patient visit. Primarily this internship will focus on throughput initiatives for our Lab and Radiology turnaround time. Both of these service departments to the ED present their own unique challenges in improving the efficiency and time it takes to receive results from the time they are ordered by the ED physician. The interns will be assigned to breakdown the current state, step by step; analyze specific opportunities for improvement; and set targets and timelines for each process.

Learning outcomes:

Provide valuable experience for interns to apply their skills and learn valuable lessons from a world environment. Develop future healthcare workers who are confident in decision making. To gain experience in developing and managing to a project plan and meeting deadlines.

The intern(s) will be able to value stream the current state for lab and testing within the only Level I Trauma Center in the Upstate.The intern(s) will make recommendations to our medical team and departmental leadership regarding process changes to increase efficiency for lab and testing turnaround time for ED patients. Intern(s) will have complete a project plan to meet the internship objectives. Accurate current state value stream map. Presentation detailing proposed solutions that have been developed and evaluated. Gantt chart or other project plan.
