How do I know if GHS has an active affiliation agreement on file with my school?A current list of our preferred affiliated schools of nursing can be found here
A GHS preceptor has agreed to facilitate my clinical placement (CNE, Midwifery, NP, and WOCN) or educational experience (project / research). Do I still need approval from Nursing Academics?Yes, a clinical placement (CNE, Midwifery or WOCN only) or education experience (project or research) must “first” go through Nursing Academics for approval, student placement/experience coordination, and approval to begin the GHS Student Clearance process.
NP students/school representatives should not be seeking clinical placements with GHS preceptors/sites on their own/or on the behalf of a student. Please see ‘Graduate Clinical Placement’ information below for the required application process.

Do I need a GHS preceptor / mentor? What if my school does not require?Yes, all GHS students must have an appropriately qualified GHS preceptor that has been verified by Nursing Academics. This preceptor is responsible for the oversight of your clinical or educational experience at all times. If you are conducting a project or research, your preceptor must be involved from the beginning with the development of your project or research topic.
My online student application and preliminary project application have been approved by Nursing Academics and my school faculty, so what approvals do I need to use GHS data or resources in my project or research?Pre-approval of GHS data or resources must first come from your GHS preceptor/mentor to ensure what you are asking is appropriate for your project/research. GHS data and resources are “restricted access only” and “require pre-approval” to include: Nursing Research Committee, GHS IRB, and nursing leadership and/or department leadership depending on the type of data or resource. No GHS data or resources should be accessed by students (including students/GHS employees) prior to receiving appropriate pre-approvals facilitated through Nursing Academics.
Graduate Clinical Placement
Where do I find the GHS Nurse Practitioner Clinical Placement Application? The application is located here: https://hsc.ghs.org/np-clinical-placement
Is there a deadline date for submitting an application for semester placement consideration?Yes, application must be received no later than 90 days prior to semester start date. Applications are processed in the order received and priority is given to full-time/part-time GHS employees attending an affiliated nursing program.
I missed the 90 day deadline, is there an opportunity for late applications to be considered? No, due to the volume of applications received each semester we are unable to accept applications after the 90 day semester deadline.
I submitted my clinical placement request but have not heard back if I was approved for a placement within GHS?When a student is approved for placement and accepted by a preceptor an email confirmation is sent to the student with placement details and information about the required GHS Student Clearance process. If a student is not selected for placement an email is sent to the student during the placement process. Students should not be reaching out to GHS preceptors or GHS sites on their own seeking clinical placement.
I am a GHS employee and want to know why am I not guaranteed NP Clinical Placement at a GHS site?We have a large number of GHS employees enrolled in NP clinical programs and we are unable to guarantee NP clinical placement for every GHS employee each semester. Preceptor’s interest and availability varies each semester.
My school is affiliated with GHS, why wasn’t I selected for a clinical placement?GHS receives a high volume of nurse practitioner student clinical placement requests each academic semester. Due to the high volume of requests, clinical placement decisions are based on multiple criteria, including preceptor interest and availability.
Can I secure my own GHS preceptor and do I still need to go through Nursing Academics for approval? No, students may not reach out to GHS preceptors and sites seeking clinical placement. All Nurse Practitioner clinical placements must be approved by Nursing Academics. A semester clinical placement application must be on file and a student must go through the required GHS Student Clearance process each semester they are approved for clinical placement at GHS. Failure to seek approval from Nursing Academics may result in placement cancellation.
Can I request a certain site or preceptor for consideration? No, due to the high demand for NP clinical placement we are unable to accommodate preceptor and/or sites requests.
How many applications does GHS receive each semester on average for NP clinical placement consideration?GHS receives up to 100 applications per semester for placement consideration prior to the semester deadline date.
Why doesn’t GHS provide more preceptors to NP students given the high demand of clinical placement needs?Nursing Academics continues to seek new NP preceptors on behalf of NP students each semester. Preceptor availability fluctuates each semester.
The application won’t allow me to upload my resume, letter of introduction and/or clinical objectives, what do I do?For application assistance, please contact Pamela Edwards at email@example.com or 864-455-1127.
Why am I asked to submit a Letter of Introduction? The letter of introduction is part of the application review process and is often shared with potential preceptors on your behalf.
Why do I need to submit my clinical objectives with my application?Nursing Academics reviews your clinical objectives as part of the placement consideration process and shares your clinical objectives with potential preceptors.
What should I include in the brief bio section of the application? Please briefly include your RN and any other related healthcare experiences you would like us to know when considering you for NP clinical placement. Please do not put “Refer to Resume”.
I am required to have more than one area of placement in the same semester; do I need to submit separate applications? No, students are now required to submit one program application. The program application should include all areas of placement and total hours needed each semester they are seeking clinical placement.
I have been approved for a rotational group experience, senior practicum student experience, graduate clinical placement or graduate educational experience within GHS, must I complete the GHS student clearance process?Yes, all students must complete the GHS student clearance process each time they are approved for a GHS experience. Additional details can be found here: https://hsc.ghs.org/newstudent
The GHS student clearance process is managed by the Office of Student Services:

I am a GHS employee with an approved clinical placement, why do I have to go through the GHS student clearance process?Because you are now in a new role as a student, and under your school’s liability, you are required to go through proper clearance processes to ensure you are appropriately credentialed in your additional role. GHS employees can complete a Background Check Attestation Form (PENDING; WILL NOTIFY IF POLICY CHANGES) and an Immunization Record Attestation Form to ease the process of gathering clearance information. Additional details can be found at: https://hsc.ghs.org/newstudent/get-started
What is myClinicalExchange and HealthStream?myClinicalExchange (mCE) is GHS’s student data management system where student clearances are centralized. Once an approved placement has been entered into mCE, the student will receive an automated introductory email from mCE with prompts to login and complete the individual compliance checklist.
HealthStream is the GHS-wide learning management system where students complete the assigned learning modules affiliated with their academic program or experience. Once a student has been entered into the system, the student will receive an e-mail notification containing login instructions.
I have completed the GHS student clearance process for my upcoming semester placement. When can I start? You may begin your placement on or after your designated mCE start date and once you have obtained your GHS student badge. Additional information on obtaining your GHS student badge can be found here: https://hsc.ghs.org/newstudent/cleared
