The Bradshaw Institute for Community Child Health & Advocacy responds to the evolving needs of children in our community through programs that promote the total health of children, injury prevention, obesity prevention, healthy child development, child abuse prevention, public policy and community outreach. BI-LO Charities Children’s Cancer Center
The BI-LO Charities Children’s Cancer Center has been treating pediatric and young adult patients since 1986, right here in Greenville, SC, as a part of Children’s Hospital.
The BI-LO Charities Children’s Cancer Center is proud to offer top-notch medical and psychosocial care to all of the patients and families that we have the honor to treat. Psychosocial programs provided for patients and families are FREE of charge and are for both oncology and hematology populations. Such programs include:
School Intervention Program
The School Intervention Program (SIP) provides assistance and guidance for patients and parents who are often unfamiliar with available school services. When a school-aged patient is diagnosed with cancer or a blood disorder, a member of our SIP team becomes involved to identify any school services available.
A school visit is offered to help administrators, teachers, school nurses and counselors understand the medical and psychosocial needs of the patient and to establish communication between the school and the medical staff. The SIP team offers school administrators suggestions for addressing questions or concerns of classmates and other parents. Classroom presentations are provided, as needed, to help classmates understand the treatment process and how they can help their classmate continue to feel a part of the class when at school and while home during times when it is not medically safe for them to attend school.
Camp Courage
Camp Courage creates a recreational and educational experience for children, adolescents and young adults living with cancer or a blood disorder. Camp Courage allows campers to share similar experiences with peers while participating in activities that promote normal development and encourages age-appropriate coping with the challenges they face.
The camp is a state-of-the-art, fully accessible facility that caters to the campers physical, mental and social needs. Staff of the BI-LO Charities Children’s Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital provide 24-hour medical supervision and care while the children are at camp.
KIDNETICS (Pediatric Therapies)
KIDNETICS is a department of the Greenville Health System Children’s Hospital that provides therapeutic services for children on an inpatient and outpatient basis from birth to age 21. Our comprehensive team is made up of registered and licensed occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech/language pathologists. Team members work in conjunction with the child’s family, physician, and school to extend all therapies into the child’s environment and maintain a continuum of care.
We also offer an enriched learning environment for volunteer, internship, and student fieldwork placements.

The Children’s Residential Program provides individualized, comprehensive, family-centered treatment for children with emotional behavior problems who have been unsuccessful in their home and community environments. Our Children’s Residential Program provides 22 beds for residential treatment for children ages 6 to 12 years. During the length of stay, care is coordinated and delivered by a dedicated team of professionals including a psychiatrist, pediatrician, nurses, behavioral therapists, recreational therapists, residence counselors, teachers and therapist aides.

Volunteer
GHS offers a summer teen volunteer program to high school students ages 15 and older. Students, who are willing to commit to volunteer at least 40 hours during the summer, are placed in various clinical and non-clinical areas across GHS. Individuals may request specific areas, but these requests are not guaranteed. Please note: volunteer opportunities do not provide direct patient care. Health Career Clubs
GHS Health Careers Clubs give high school students the opportunity to learn more about health careers through activities, simulations and projects led by medical professionals. Students accepted into the program meet one Thursday each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Greenville Memorial Medical Campus. Dues are $15 per year.

MedEx Academy
Medical Experience Academy or MedEx Academy is a one-of-a-kind program developed to create more interest among young people in pursuing careers in health care. Students accepted into the academy have the unique opportunity to explore health care through simulations, lectures, workshops, research and community service.The academy is divided into four tiers from high school seniors to college seniors. Each tier has its own eligibility requirements, application process, program dates and curriculum developed specifically for students based on their academic level.

Alive at 25
Alive at 25 is a survival course developed by the National Safety Council for drivers ages 15-24. It is designed to prevent the #1 killer of teens: automobile crashes. SC Alive at 25 is taught by off-duty Deputy Sheriffs, Municipal Police Officers and SC Highway Patrol Officers. The course is delivered in one 4.5-hour program, which focuses on the behaviors, decision-making and risks facing young drivers every time they get behind the wheel.

The Guard Your Life Challenge
The event is a half-day driving clinic designed to educate teens on the dangers of distracted driving, to teach basic braking skills, and to give participants a feel for stability, traction control, ABS systems and the effect these systems have on the vehicle.
The class is taught by BMW certified instructors. The maximum number of participants is limited to 30 per class.

Teen Support Group – Showing Courage All Together (S.C.A.T.)
S.C.A.T. provides a monthly support group that meets at the BI-LO Charities Children’s Cancer Center for patients diagnosed with a blood disorder or cancer and their parents. Here teens have the chance to meet and talk about all that they have been through and have the opportunity to help new teens that are diagnosed along the way.
