Center for Family Medicine
This is our clinic, the heart and home of our program. We have fantastic staff and nurses, and all participate together in team-based care. We perform many office-based procedures including minor skin surgeries, arthrocenteses and injections, GYN procedures (including endometrial biopsy, IUD and implantable contraception management). Resident, faculty and administrative offices are all located on site. CFM also houses our conference room, where we have daily noon conferences.
Greenville Memorial Hospital
Conveniently located across the street from CFM, Greenville Memorial represents the main campus of the Greenville Health System, and is Upstate South Carolina’s tertiary referral center. The Family Medicine Teaching Service is a two to three resident team that cares for our clinic patients when they need hospital care. Greenville Memorial Hospital is also the location for inpatient pediatric, internal medicine, surgery, Ob-Gyn and cardiology rotations for our residents.
Veterans Affairs Clinic
We are excited about the new partnership with the VA starting the academic year of 2016 – 2017. Residents will rotate four weeks at a time, have the opportunity to see general medicine, subspecialty care, rural medicine and a unique home-visit program.
The GHS Health Sciences Center includes seven medical campuses and three academic partners, including:
- USC School of Medicine Greenville
- Clemson University
- Furman University
In 2012, GHS’ Greenville Memorial Medical Campus welcomed the the University of South Carolina (USC) School of Medicine Greenville’s inaugural class. The USC School of Medicine Greenville is a four-year medical school with a highly innovative and integrated curriculum.
Students perform third and fourth year clinical clerkships within GHS, including required third year rotations, fourth year acting internships and electives in rural medicine, sports medicine and lifestyle medicine within our department.
As part of the GHS Health Sciences Center experience, residents can readily access the medical school facilities and faculty, which include a state-of-the-art Clinical Simulation Lab, a biomedical sciences division of population health and initiatives centered in family medicine such as the Lifestyle Medicine curriculum.
Exercise is Medicine/Lifestyle Medicine
The Lifestyle and Exercise Medicine initiative is a unique collaboration within the GHS Health Sciences Center. Our Family Medicine program plays a pivotal role in driving this program forward, integrating elements of teaching and scholarly activity within our residency and medical student education, and providing the clinical arm for patient care. In fact, our institution is the first program nationally to incorporate Lifestyle Medicine into its curriculum: http://greenvillemed.sc.edu/USCSOMGLifestyleMedicine.shtml.
Clemson University represents the primary research partner for the GHS Health Sciences Center and provides research and educational infrastructure to the clinical expertise found within the system. The newly formed partnership has led to the development of the Division of Research and Scholarship, which seeks to be the source of medical breakthroughs, product development, federal funding and improved healthcare delivery at a low cost.
Among other opportunities, the GHS Health Sciences Center collaboration takes advantage of Clemson’s health sciences, bioengineering, genetics and nursing programs, which has tremendous implications for GHS Graduate Medical Education. RAs an example, residents, fellows and faculty are routinely offered opportunities for partnerships in scholarly activity with Clemson faculty and educational initiatives such as the GHS/Clemson Graduate Certificate in Clinical and Translational Research Program.

Furman University, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts institutions, is the primary undergraduate partner for the GHS Health Sciences Center. Each year, approximately 25-35% of Furman University students enter a health-related career. The partnership between GHS and Furman provides observational and internship experiences for students considering careers in medicine, pharmacy, physical or occupational therapy, public health and health administration.
GHS Family Medicine residents rotate within the student health clinic at Furman University to gain experience in adolescent and young adult health care. Additionally, our academic Family Medicine residency emphasizes a commitment to teaching. As part of your training, residents have the opportunity to solidify their knowledge base by teaching a variety of learners, including undergraduate and medical students, through the GHS Health Sciences Center partnerships. These relationships also provide fertile ground for scholarly activity and quality improvement initiatives that ultimately lead to improved healthcare.
