Residents who wish to pursue mission trips may do so during their electives. Mission trips offer an opportunity to focus on further developing skills and expertise in working with the underserved in a resource poor setting. Ample opportunities for mission trips are available with institution-affiliated faculty.
Residents who would like to pursue these trips should discuss their interests with the program director to allow for:
- Adequate planning for call coverage
- Development of learning objectives
- Assistance in attaining mentorship for supervision, evaluation and guidance on a scholarly project.
Dr. Palmira S. Snape Endowment Fund
Established in 2005, this endowment has been provided through philanthropy to the Department of Family Medicine to partially assist residents in travel expenses related to mission trip services. Residents who are interested in pursuing these funds should apply through the program director.
Dr. Juan Teruel and Dr. Amber Passini traveled as members of a medical team to Haiti. The team treated over 1,000 patients with a variety of diseases including malaria, typhoid fever, intestinal parasitic infections and malnutrition.
Dr. Sonny Park, a third-year resident, traveled with Dr. Juan Teruel of the Center for Family Medicine faculty, to Northern Haiti. A small church building was turned into a clinic. In four days, the three providers on the team saw 802 patients. Patients presented with such conditions as Falciparum malaria, amoebiasis, intestinal helminthic infections and malnutrition. This trip was a unique experience in third world medicine, teamwork and travel.

Dr. Palmira S. Snape funded an endowment for our Family Medicine residents to ensure they would be financially able to participate on mission trips.
